HEAT SOURCES: Water Heaters

Conventional storage-type water heaters can be used as a heat source for radiant floor heating in either a dedicated or combined configuration.

A dedicated water heater can be sized to the radiant floor heating load with correct safety equipment installed.

A combined system incorporates both radiant floor heating and domestic hot water usage and needs to be sized accordingly. Multiple water heaters may be used depending on the radiant floor heating load and domestic hot water usage. Special care must be taken to protect the potable water supply in a combined system and although not as efficient as a condensing boiler, when sized correctly and with the incorporation of weather-responsive controls, water heaters can be effective in bringing radiant floor heating comfort to an area.
